【２】疑問：なぜ「double」ではなく、「doubled」なのか

１．後半の「the production of rice and wheat more than doubled.」をfull sentenceで書くと、「The production of rice and wheat increased more than the production of rice and wheat doubled」（米と麦の生産は２倍になったよりも多く、（米と麦の生産量は）増えた。）となる。
→ 同一文章中の重複部分を省略すると、「The production of rice and wheat increased more than doubled」となる。
→ 前文中に「increased（自動詞）」との重複を省略すると、「The production of rice and wheat more than doubled」となる。
→ 要するに「doubled」は「increased（自動詞）」に対応した「double」の自動詞の過去形「doubled」である。
２．名詞又は形容詞のdouble
Doubleは、動詞（自他）の他に、名詞（2倍）と形容詞（2倍の～）としても使用される。例えば、「The production of rice and wheat in 1936 was more than double what was in 1911.」のような場合は、名詞又は形容詞としてのdoubleである。
